Setting up Tiered or Volume discounts
You can create a Tiered Discount by selecting the "Tier Discount" promotion type in Kite. This feature allows you to set progressive rewards based on cart quantity or subtotal, target specific products or collections, and display an interactive widget on your product pages to drive higher average order value.
Follow these steps to configure, customize, and publish your tiered discount:
Phase 1: Create the Promotion and Set Targeting
- Start the Promotion: In the Kite app, click Create Promotion and select the Tiered discount option. Give your promotion a clear name.
- Select Target Products: Choose which products the discount applies to. You can select "All products" or narrow it down using specific products, product variants, collections, product tags, or product types, product line attributes or products with subscriptions .
- Combine Filters (Optional): You can stack targeting rules for hyper-specific promotions. For example, you can require a product to belong to a specific collection and be a specific product type to be eligible for the discount.
Phase 2: Set Thresholds and Discount Types
- Define the Threshold Base: Decide how customers qualify for the tiers. Thresholds can be based on:
- The subtotal or quantity of all products in the cart.
- The subtotal or quantity of just the selected products targeted in the previous step.
- Each selected product (e.g., applying the logic individually based on the quantity of a single specific item in the cart).
- Choose the Reward: Select whether the discount is a Percentage off, a Fixed amount off, or a Fixed price.
- Crucial Setting for Fixed Amount/Price: When using fixed amounts, pay attention to the "amount off applies to each item" toggle. If disabled, a $5 discount comes off the combined total. If enabled, the $5 comes off each individual product.
- Build Your Tiers: Add your progressive rules (e.g., Buy 2 for 10% off, Buy 3 for 20% off). You can add as many tiers as you need and assign custom "Cart Labels" to show specific messaging in the cart when a tier is reached.
Phase 3: Advanced Settings (Optional)
If you need stricter control over the offer, open the advanced settings:
- Manual Discount: Require a discount code instead of applying the offer automatically.
- Usage Limits: Limit the total number of products that can be discounted.
- Targeting: Restrict the offer to a specific Shopify Market, specific customer segments, or require certain cart attributes.
- POS: Enable the offer for your Point of Sale channels.
Phase 4: Customize the Storefront Widget
- Choose a Layout: Once saved, you will enter the widget editor. For quantity-based thresholds, you can use interactive Radio buttons (which automatically add the selected quantity to the cart when clicked). For amount-based thresholds, a standard table layout is used.
- Edit Text & Colors: Customize the text, set default selections, and adjust the typography and colors to match your brand.
- Translations: Add and customize languages directly in the editor to support international markets. Save your design changes.
Phase 5: Test and Go Live
- Test Mode: After saving, click View Offer. The promotion is currently in "Test Mode," meaning it is completely hidden from your live customers.
- Verify the Logic: On your store, add items to the cart to ensure the tiers apply correctly, the widget updates, and non-targeted products do not receive the discount.
- Activate: Once you are satisfied with how the discount behaves, toggle the offer from "Test" to Active inside the Kite app so your customers can start saving!
Technical Note/Limitation:
- Widget Display: In order for the tiered discount widget to actually appear on your storefront product pages, you must ensure the Kite Theme App Extension is enabled in your Shopify Theme Editor. If this is turned off, the widget will not render.
Troubleshooting/Checklist:
- Is the widget not showing up? Verify that the Kite Theme App Extension is enabled in your live theme settings.
- Is the discount applying to too much? Check your threshold settings. Ensure it is set to the subtotal/quantity of selected products, rather than all products in the cart.
- Is the fixed discount amount too high? Review the "amount off applies to each item" toggle. If a $10 discount is taking $20 off a cart with 2 items, you likely have this toggle enabled when you intended for a flat order discount.
- Is the offer not showing for customers? Ensure you have toggled the promotion status from "Test Mode" to "Active."
